課程概述

Japanese ACG (anime, comics, games) has become an increasing popular topic for cultural studies in recent years, given its impact on the shaping of the otaku (sub-)culture, diverse audience and subject matters, and its hybridisation of Japanese and Western cultures. This course seeks to evaluate relevant literature and media alike to find out the ways in which fairy tales and fairy tale tropes are represented and reinterpreted in Japanese animations and manga. It will focus on the core icon of mahou shoujo (magic girl) in Japanese ACG works such as Princess Tutu (2002), Snow White with the Red Hair (2015-2016), Prétear (2001), and perhaps even films like Ponyo (2008). Apart from textual analysis, this study also aims to engage with scholarly studies of fairy tale narratives by Kumiko Saito, Amanda Kennell, and particularly Jack Zipes. 

課程目標
This course is designed to further develop students’ ability to grasp the latest research trend of fairy tale studies, in particular its applications to Japanese ACG works. At the end of this course, the students are expected to be able to analyse the cross-cultural issues of fairy tale narratives and the icon of the ‘magical girl’ in Japanese ACG, as well as the role they play in creating culturally hybrid characters and ambience that appeal to fans and readers around the world. 
課程要求
Students are required to complete the following tasks during the course:
(1) reading and offering critical evaluation of readings assigned for each week; (2) engaging in the discussions of the readings and relevant research issues with the instructor; (3) preparing a draft thesis proposal based on the results of the study.
