課程概述 |
To reflect the cutting-edge thinking about business strategy, this course offers students a solid economic foundation for strategic analysis, and acquaints students with the most important models for understanding strategies chosen by firms with market power and shows how such firms adapt to different market environments. By presenting basic concepts of economic theory rooted in modern strategy literature, the course provides interesting lens for viewing a broad array of the strategic activities of the firm in pursuit of competitive advantage in the marketplace.
The course departs from market structure and competition as the ground of business-level strategy. We also link the strategic thinking to the theories including industrial organization, resource-based view, competitive dynamics and population ecology. After the mid-term exam, the focus is extended to the gaming decision in the competitive rivalry; that is, how firms or individuals interplay with others in their best interests. Overall, this course aims to relate economic theories to real-world cases, greatly presenting the implication of imperfectly competitive markets for corporate and social decisions. |

課程要求 |
-This course is based on the premise that the bulk of your learning takes place as you prepare for each class, attend the class, and participate in the ensuing group and class discussions. As such, attendance to the class on time is mandatory. Active participation, both in the class and in the group, is an indispensable element of learning experience.
-Preparation of HBS cases and submission of case write-ups. Students are required to read and submit the case write-ups on a group basis for each HBS case. The case write-ups have to be word-processed, with reasonable line space and fonts, and signed by team members before turning in. Since report length will not necessarily reflect its quality, please limit your write-ups within TWO pages each, excluding necessary appendices. There will be no credit provided for overdue Write-ups.
-Preparation of HBR articles and on-class presentation. To enhance your reading and presentation skills, HBR articles are assigned for some weekly topics. Student groups are responsible for presenting the article and leading the discussion.
-Term project. Student groups are required to analyze an industry by the framework and tools learned from this course.
-Two written exams. Written exams are held in the format of essay questions in the middle and at end of this course. |
