課程概述

The purpose of this course is twofold: (1) to further improve your listening,
speaking, reading and writing abilities in English through a course design
that emphasizes the integration of the four skills, and (2) to help you
develop academic skills that can help you transit successfully from high
school to university classes. To achieve the first goal, you need to finish
the assigned reading before class and participate actively in class
discussions. You also need to complete a theme-based learning project that
demonstrates your ability to listen, talk, read, and write about a topic/
topics of your interests. To accomplish the second goal, you will conduct a
group presentation to teach one important aspect of academic skills to your
classmates. The last 15 minutes of each class will be reserved for extensive
reading to build your reading speed and fluency.

課程要求
College study skills group presentation: Seven group presentations on college
study skills will be given throughout the semester. The purpose of these
presentations is to help you develop skills for effective study in college,
including reading textbooks, writing reports, time management, etc. The topics
for the first 5 presentations are assigned. Groups responsible for the last
two presentations will select their own topics.

Extensive reading: The last 15 minutes of each class will be used for
extensive reading. The goal of this activity is to encourage reading for
pleasure as well as to build reading speed and fluency. You can read whatever
you want (no textbooks, please) and at your own pace. You should choose books
that are enjoyable and not too difficult (at least 95% of words should already
be known to you).

Theme-based learning project: You should compile a learning project based on
a topic/ topics of your choice. In the project, you must demonstrate your
efforts to practice all four skills with materials about the topic(s).
