Overview:
This course aims at and beyond the training of basic English skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—and
seeks to provide some catalyst for critical thinking and a platform for exchange of ideas. This is a student-oriented
class and your active participation is essential for your learning. Students will work closely with their teammates.
Each student group of four should see the TA regularly for consultation and rehearsal of reports.
Grading:
Assessed Individually:
Weekly Listening Quizzes 20% (fill in the blanks in a given passage taken from the previous week’s listening assignment)
Impromptu Speeches 10% (3-minute each; every student has 2 chances)
Midterm Exam 20% (multiple choices on vocabulary and content of this semester’s readings)
Final Examination 20% (multiple choices on vocabulary and content of this semester’s readings)
Assessed as a Group of 3:
Voiceover 15% (20-minute voiceover of any film clip)
Report 15% (20-minute presentation and 4-page written report of any related topic)
