Course description:
This course will concentrate on four main areas:
(1) literary appreciation and pronunciation correction through poetry and prose reading, memorization and recitation;
(2) reading and translation practice with essays and short stories;
(3) listening practice with audio and video files on the Internet;
(4) various oral presentations; and possibly:
(5) a few short Chinese-to-English translation practices, to strengthen grammatical skills.
Only serious students who did
well in English in high school and who genuinely enjoy English should choose this course; be forewarned that this is one of the more difficult and tiring Freshman English options, and a fair amount of homework will be assigned. Active class participation is expected of each student in this course.
Course requirements/grade calculation:
Attendance (any student with more than three unexcused absences or five tardinesses may not receive a grade for this course), homework, quizzes, class participation, oral presentations, attitude, progress made, final exam.
No textbook is assigned; students must print out all handouts themselves from the class website; students are also required to bring a small notebook to each class for use as a pronunciation and grammar journal; also a clear pocket folder to organize handouts and homework assignments. |
