1. Brief Introduction to Statistical Methods in Science (1 week)
Error acquisition, analysis, and propagation.
2. Mechanics (2 week)
Review of Newtonian mechanics: F=ma, spring, momentum, angular momentum, energy, conservation, diffusion, Brownian motion, membrane transport, and ultrasonic imaging
3. Electricity and Magnetism (3 weeks)
Review of classical electricity and mechanism: action potential and neuronal signal propagation
4. Special Theory of Relativity (2 weeks)
Length contraction, time-dilation, E=mc2 and positron emission tomography
5. Optics (2 weeks)
Reflection, refraction, scattering, diffraction, Huygens-Fresnel Principle, and structure of the eye
6. Microscopy (3 weeks)
Bright field microscopy and applications to histology (H&E imaging)
Phase contrast microscopy and live cell observation
Fluorescence microscopy and antibody detection
7. Quantum mechanics, nuclear magnetic resonance, and magnetic resonance imaging (3 weeks)
Wave-particle duality, Schrödinger equation, and atomic structure
Absorption emission spectroscopy of molecules, x-ray imaging, and computed tomography (CT)
Spin and nuclear magnetic resonance
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
