課程概述

This is the first course, in a two-semester course series, designed primarily for undergraduate psychology majors or minors who anticipate future applications of statistical methods. Topics covered in this course include an overview of descriptive statistics, foundational concepts in inferential statistics (probability, population, sample, sampling methods, sampling distributions, estimation of population parameters, binomial, normal, t, and F distributions), hypothesis significance testing (Type I and II errors, statistical power), and comparisons of means (t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, multiple comparisons of means, and effect sizes).

課程目標
Objectives

1. To acquire basic skills necessary for applying statistical principles of inference to well-defined psychological research;
2. To enhance statistical thinking, reasoning, literacy, attitudes, and beliefs;
3. To be able to critically evaluate manuscripts in which statistical techniques covered in this course were applied; and
4. To carry out numerical analyses of data by a hand-held calculator (e.g., Casio fx-260), Excel, or by IBM SPSS.

課程要求
Student’s performance in this course will be evaluated based on a pretest (5%), homework (15%), three inclass exams (60%), and lab performance (實習課程20%). Specific scope and format of these assessment mechanisms will be announced later in class.

Prerequisite of this course is a mastery of algebra and analytical geometry at the high-school level.
