課程概述 |
Like the taste of pudding is in the eating, so the test of one’s English competency is in the writing. Furthermore, there is no shortcut to brilliant written English; if any, then being an active reader and a diligent writer certainly helps. In this class, students will learn to more actively explore and study the rhetoric and organizing principles of English writing. Students will learn about the guidelines of different types of writing, and will see how these skills are put into practice through reading and discussing sample pieces of writing. There will be in-class writing about every other week. There will also be quizzes on new vocabulary and key sentences from their reading. |
課程目標 |
Students are expected to be familiar with the guiding principles of narration, description, examples, classification, and comparison. They will produce coherent pieces of writing of about 250-300 words in length. Through participation in discussion and textual analysis, they will learn to be a more critical reader and acquire a keener sense of the English language. They will not only enlarge their knowledge of vocabulary, but will also learn to use the vocabulary in appropriate context. |
課程要求 |
As the course is organized around in-class discussion and writing, attendance comprises the basic requirement. Students who are absent (i.e. no-show without advanced notices to the instructor) for more than 10 hours in this semester will be flunked; students who are late for more than 30 minutes with no prior notice to the instructor will be regarded as absent. All in-class writing must be submitted by the end of the class; otherwise the writing must be submitted before 12 o'clock noon of the coming Monday, with 10 points deducted (the penalty does not apply to those students who are absent because of extreme conditions [e.g. illnesses, accidents, financial or family issues, etc.]). Take-home writing assignments must be submitted before 12 o’clock noon of the coming Monday; submission after the deadline will not be considered. |
