課程概述 |
In this semester, this course will focus on introducing and practicing speech genres on a range of topics: description, process, argumentation, and news report. Each student will practice three in-class speech demonstrations before giving a final speech at the end of the course. Students will reflect on their speech presentations through written self-reflections and peer evaluations.
|
課程目標 |
By the end of the course, students will be able to (1) outline and organize an effective speech; (2) develop practical presentation skills; (3) research on their own a topic of interest; (4) have and explain their opinions in class discussions; and (5) give a speech confidently, clearly, and effectively in front of a crowd. |
課程要求 |
30% Topic presentations: Each will lead three individual presentations on signed-up dates. For each talk, students will also include a discussion session. In total, each presentation will last about 20 minutes. Students should video-record their presentations for later self-evaluations.
20% Evaluation reports: Following the week after each individual presentation, the student will write and submit a self-evaluation form along with peers’ feedback (both in the same review form provided by the instructor). All materials should staple together and submit on time. A cover page will not be needed.
20% Final presentation: Each student will plan and carry out one final speech on a topic of your own choosing. This individual presentation will take place at the end of the course. This will be a formal talk which requires you to synthesize and apply aspects of a good speech that we are studying in the course.
30% Activities, attitudes, and attendance: Students need to come to each class session on time and engage actively in spontaneous speaking activities, by individual or in group. Your final grade will be lowered if you fail to do so.
