課程概述

This integrated language course aims to enhance students’ English proficiency at the high-intermediate level. The course is also intended to develop in the students an interest in learning English and a more thorough understanding of the English and American culture, as well as to improve students’ critical thinking and presentation skills. In addition to sharpening the students’ English skills, after taking this course, students are expected to become critical readers and thinkers, clear communicators in multiple contexts, and active analysts of contemporary cultures.

課程目標
1. Students will improve their proficiency in English speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
2. Students will develop critical opinions on important current issues.
3. Students will acquire communicative skills along with teamwork ethics and carry out impartial peer evaluation.

課程要求
Quizzes: These are quizzes at the beginning of class meant to make sure that students have previewed course material, be they readings or video clips.

Participation: Students are required to come to class prepared to discuss the assigned texts/clips and actively participate in group discussion. Each group, consisting of 5-6 members, will try to provide in-depth answers to one of the week’s discussion questions. After class, students will have to fill out an online survey (in Google Forms, by Wednesday midnight) to rate the performance of all the group members.

Group Presentation: After discussion, each group will present its ideas for 5 minutes (and no more). A good presentation shall have a concise central idea with good oral delivery. All members will receive the same grade, three-quarters of which rest with the entire class. Students shall listen carefully to the presentations and mark fairly on the grading sheet.

Essays: Students will write three short essays (150 words) during the semester. Essays 1 and 3 will be responses to class material. Essay 2 will be a proposal for the final group project, which will then be used in the final project topic vote and grouping. Writing prompts and guidelines will be distributed in advance. NO late assignments will be accepted.

Final Group Project: In groups of 5-6, students will do a 20-minute group presentation at the end of the semester on a topic proposed in Essay 2. Groups may schedule an appointment with the TA for consultation before the presentation.
