Course description: This course attempts to help students develop a feeling for contemporary English (primarily the American version) through close reading of selected essays and articles published in the print media. Article topics cover a wide range of subjects and styles. Classroom activities include regular lectures and Q&A sessions plus some movie viewing. Since we meet at 9:10 in the morning, I expect you to be punctual. All lectures will be delivered in English. Every effort is made to reduce the tension and anxiety associated with learning a foreign language in the classroom so you can settle spontaneously in a receptive mode and feel uninhibited when the urge to perform kicks in. And since most of you come from elite high schools, I do expect you to perform with confidence in class, as I also expect you to like English and be willing to improve your English skills.
