課程概述

Constructed based on the results of needs analyses that performed interviews with the faculty members and students at NTU, this yearly course aims to foster the English skills required to cope with the demands of English-Medium Instruction (EMI) courses in a more effective and efficient manner. Towards this end, in this course, students will practice and foster efficient strategies to comprehend and analyze reading passages and aural texts dealing with specific academic topics. Additionally and more importantly, they will participate in custom-designed speaking activities that resemble EMI communication events to further strengthen their communicative competence and generate written works that summarize or integrate information from multiple sources. Further, by virtue of cultivating these English skills that support EMI course-taking, this preparation course concurrently intends to strengthen students’ confidence and motivation as they pertain to EMI learning and lower their EMI learning anxiety.

課程目標
Upon the completion of this yearly preparation course, students can expect to be able to
1. understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning,
2. communicate effectively, give a well-structured presentation, and present key points about integrated information,
3. summarize information from different sources and present clear arguments in writing, and
4. display enhanced confidence and motivation and decreased anxiety for EMI learning

* “Plagiarism is the act of taking another person's writing, conversation, song, or even idea and passing it off as your own. This includes information from web pages, books, songs, television shows, email messages, interviews, articles, artworks or any other medium. When you hear about famous scholars getting in trouble for plagiarism, it usually means they copied exact sentences or almost-exact sentences and phrases from someone else and did not include a footnote or quotation marks or any kind of indication that the words were not their own” [Le Moyne College, 2023 (https://resources.library.lemoyne.edu/guides/academicintegrity/what-is-plagiarism )].
** Numerous websites have provided guidelines for citing and quoting sources, such as Purdue Online Writing Lab (owl.english.purdue.edu/), The Writer’s Handbook (writing.wisc.edu/Handbook/QPA_plagiarism.html).
