Labs: Give practices with the software and hardware. Establish a starting point for projects. Lab code frequently serves as starting point for projects.
Software simulations of communications systems:
- Modulation only: BPSK, ASK, 8PSK, 16QAM
- Coding + modulation: Hamming coded system, convolutional coded system
- Wireless image transmission
- Wireless audio transmission
- OFDM (optional)
- Coding + modulation + OFDM (optional)
Hardware implementation:
- All digital PLL
- Modem circuit design
Midterm report: Each group of 3 students choose a modern (advance) communication system (technology). Study, research, and present to the class. Everyone can have an overview of 16 modern communication technologies by participating the presentations. Topics includes:
- WiMedia (UWB)
- Wireless sensor networks (IEEE 802.15.4, Zigbee)
- IEEE 802.15.3c (60GHz)
- Bluetooth
- WiMax (802.16d, 16j, 16m)

Final Projects: Student selected and implemented. Either software implementation of a previous studied communication system, or partial implementation of the system by hardware (FPGA,DSPprocessor,etc.). |
