Course Description:
This course is designed to enhance students’ English proficiency in four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking, as a preparation for their further study of western literatures and languages. English will be used throughout the class.
Course Requirements and grading policy:
Regular Attendance, discipline and quiz.* (15%)
Work in pair to prepare the vocabulary list and lead the discussion. (5%)
Mid-term and final written examinations. (70%)
Oral report. (10%)
*Please make sure the following rules:
1. No electronic dictionary is used in class.
2. No electronic communicative device is operating in class.
3. One violation of the above rules causes 20- point subtraction in the “attendance.”

Essay 2: `Singaporean government tries relaxing its iron grip`
Essay 3: `A Dose of History`
Essay 4: `China`s Aids crisis threatens its booming economy` + Essay 5: `That says less and less`
