課程概述

本課程人數已滿,不提供加簽。第一堂課會溝通重要事項,已選上同學請務必出席,否則建議退選。

The topic of the first semester is “love,” and the second semester “hate.”

What can language do for love? What can we decipher in expressions of love? What aspects of our relationship with the other are implied in the way we converse? In this course, we learn, practice, and enhance our English by analyzing texts of love and creating our expressions of love. The texts include love songs, love poems, a critical essay, and three love films.

This class offers creative opportunities to learn English by actually using it. There will be texts you preview and many activities to engage with them and further practice English in different ways. Active participariton is the key to this class. If you want lectures in which you sit silently or exams of standard/correct answers, this class is not for you.

UNIT 1 How to Listen to the Differences in Love

Does the one he sings to love him back? What does he try to do through this song? What further development of the romantic relationship is she proposing? How does the loss of love differ from one song to the other? In these weeks, we listen to English love songs to analyze the different perspectives and stages implied in the lyrics and melody. In one of the weeks, we look for the English love songs they feel relevant to themselves and analyze the particular relationships in the songs. In the last of these weeks, we read a psychology article from the book Love and Addiction to explore the differences and complexities between love and addiction.

First Essay: Love and X (from the perspective of a particular professional/advocate/enthusiast)

UNIT 2 How to Say “I Love You”

How do poets say “I love you”? Does “loving you” mean differently for women, men, and other genders? What understandings of love, attitudes for the other, and capacities for affection are implied in these expressions of love? In these weeks, we read love poems by male, female, and queer writers to observe how they use language for love.

Second Essay: A Love Letter from Someone who Loves You

UNIT 3 How to Quarrel and Converse in Love

In this unit, we watch three films that capture the dialogues between a man and a woman in different stages of their relationship. Across these stages, we analyze the different viewpoints of characters, their intentions behind utterances, their connections and conflicts, how they understand and misunderstand each other, and how they open and continue conversations….

Third Essay: The Psychic Apparatus of a Speaker

30%
Active class participation is crucial. This class involves not only lectures but also a lot of activities and discussions of different kinds. 20%
10 of the classes require previewing, thinking about a question before class, and taking short notes in your textbook. Doing so greatly helps your participation in class; not doing so will make it difficult for you to keep up with the class and for others to work with you.
3.
in-class worksheet
20%
In each class, you will fill in a sheet as the activities proceed. 2% will be given to each sheet. If you miss a class and still want a score for this, you can get an empty sheet from TA, ask your classmates what happened, and hand in it within a week.
4.
three essays
30%
200-300 words Only paper copies are accepted. If the late submission is within a week, I will give you a score without marking your essay and 50% will be taken off the score.
