課程概述 |
This course aims to help students develop critical thinking abilities through guided reading and discussion of thought-provoking texts. This semester, the reading materials include a novel that responds to the world we inhabit in soulful ways, as well as writings by two of the most prominent thinkers of our time. The listening activities, on the other hand, are meant to keep the students current with what is happening in the world today. The materials will be culled from authentic audio-visual recordings such as interviews, speeches, and newscast. The regular listening and reading sessions aside, there will also be sessions devoted to critical thinking and skills of reading newspaper English. |
1. Regular attendance. Two absences may be allowed without penalty during the semester. Unexcused absence from five classes will result in zero point on the "attendance and class participation" part of your final grade.
2. Active class participation. Participation in class activities is essential.
3. Proper preparation and reading responses. Preparation prior to the class meeting is required. You do not need to consult secondary material, but do go over the assigned reading at least once. Turn in four reading responses throughout the semester: preferably two before the midterm exam and two after. The response can be in either format: a) you summarize the key points of the reading; or b) you imagine yourself having a conversation with the author and raise questions for him/her about the text. Each response should be at least 100 words, handwritten or word-processed, and is due in hardcopy form in class.
**Alternative plan: Two of the responses may be replaced by vocabulary lists, with each list consisting of at least fifteen words and their English definitions.
4. Midterm exam.
5. Conference presentation + write-up. In the second half of the semester, write a commentary and prepare an oral presentation on either of the assigned texts. In the write-up, (a) briefly summarize the author’s main argument, (b) comment on it, and (c) provide at least one example to illustrate your point. The write-up should be at least 400 words; the oral presentation should be 3-5 minutes. The presentations will be organized as a “conference” where a panel discussion follow the presentations. |
