Course Description
Aimed at enhancing the four skills, this course will improve students’ ability to think, speak, express and debate in English language. (1) Reading: Selections are from literary works including poetry, essays, drama, and, above all, selected scenes from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. (2) Writing: Students are required to write two short compositions and one ppt script (for in-class presentation on an assigned topic). (3) Listening will cover a wide range of topics such as speed dating, secrets of the sexes, behavior training, national stereotypes and selections from BBC’s “Learning English” website. (4) Speaking aims at daily life conversation and topic-oriented presentation for college-level work. The three-hour course is in general divided into three sections: student presentation, in-class discussion, and guided reading for literary works. Organized around lectures and student discussions/presentations, the course is designed to be collaborative throughout.
Reminders for Students
1. If you are absent more than three times (including three times without legitimate proof), you shall not expect to receive any favour when you flunk the course.
2. Any late submission of compositions after the due date will receive a deduction of 10 points per day. Note that Ceiba shuts off “uploading assignments” from 21-24 each day, so you must submit your composition before 9:00 pm.
3. All assignments have to be word-processed, double-spaced, and submitted online or in class according to Professor Chiu’s instruction.
4. The students are not allowed to use electronic devices (e.g., laptop, iPhone) in class except for presentation or performance.
評分標準 (Grading Policy)
The final grade will be based on exams, tests, presentations, performances, discussions and class participation (each ranges from 5%-25%), processed by Excel and open to inquiries.
