Shakespeare’s Sonnets

A sonnet is a little poem in a specific form which originated in Italy. By the 13th century it signified a poem of fourteen lines which followed a strict rhyme scheme and specific structure. In this course we will
1) discuss how conventions associated with the sonnet have evolved over its history
2) learn the rhyme scheme & versification of a Shakespearean sonnet
3) explore themes of love, time, and death in the 154 Sonnets
4) Unearth sonnets or half-sonnets embedded in Shakespeare’s plays.

本課程以多媒體教具進行,含DVD,ppt,網路資源,本校圖書館、外教中心有關莎劇視覺媒體的材料,以供學生作為自主學習(self-directed learning) 的教材。

Course Objectives:
1) Learn English with Shakespeare   
2) Learn Shakespeare’s Sonnets and ( a minor goal) how to translate them into poewtic Chinese
3) Internalize Shakespeare's language

莎翁所處的文藝復興時期,乃是西方人文、藝術發展的盛世。莎翁劇本與詩作在眾多經典中擁有最多的影視資源,本校目前的蒐藏已足敷大學人文教育所需。對於e世代的學生而言,文字逐漸式微。透過賞析十四行詩,循序漸進,進入英文文字的欣賞、分析、與母語的比較,乃至於模擬莎翁的文采,內化為為一生的語言底蘊。
