課程概述

Latin II is a continuation of Latin I but will focus heavily on improving your reading skills. As such, you will be reading a series of unedited and un-adapted texts primarily taken from Wheelock's Latin Reader, 2e: Selections from Latin Literature. The first semester of the course will focus primarily on Cicero’s writings, before moving on to imperial historical literature (Livy). Each text will have vocabulary notes as well as grammatical commentaries.

課程目標
The aim of the course is, first and foremost, to improve your reading skills. As such, you will be required to memorize vocabulary, identify grammatical structures, and be able to produce an accurate English translation of the passages at hand.

說明
1.
Attendance/Participatio
20%
You will be expected to read/prepare for about 20-25 lines of Latin per week. Preparing means ensuring you have looked up unknown vocabulary and have a sense for what the passage means. DO NOT WRITE OUT YOUR TRANSLATION. You will be expected to translate orally in class. You are expected to attend class each week. You will be given one free absence. Other absences will need to be justified, according to the precepts of the student handbook (illness etc…). You are expected to arrive on time to class. If you must miss a class, please tell me ahead of time.
2.
Quiz
30%
Each class will have a short quiz which will address some grammatical aspect and one sentence to translate from the class before. I will drop the lowest two scores.
3.
Midterm
20%
Both the midterm and final will be made up of two (longer) or three (shorter) passages. You will be asked to answer grammatical questions (multiple choice), vocabulary questions (multiple choice) and then translate the passage. The passages will be taken from the weekly reading and some of the questions will come from the weekly quizzes
4.
Final
25%
Both the midterm and final will be made up of two (longer) or three (shorter) passages. You will be asked to answer grammatical questions (multiple choice), vocabulary questions (multiple choice) and then translate the passage. The passages will be taken from the weekly reading and some of the questions will come from the weekly quizzes
5.
Workshop
5%
In this module, I will introduce you to the "jobs and duties" of classicists, starting with the editing of classical documents. We will look at old manuscripts of the Roman Law and see if we can try to come up with the original passage.
