Course Description

TA Class:
This course is designed to build listening and speaking skills for practical usages of English in academic and professional settings as well as everyday lives. Furthermore, students will be given instructions and exercises to practice English speaking on various topics.

Course Objective
TA Class:
The course aims to provide students with an opportunity to practice English listening and learn many useful English skills. It is the goal of this course to equip students with skills that can be applied to future (cross-cultural) English communication and to help students develop an interest in learning English outside the classroom.
Course Requirement
TA Class:
- Class Participation and Attendance (40 %): Your participation and attendance are highly valued in this class. All of the exercises, discussions, and worksheets will be considered as a part of your in-class participation. By actively engaging in discussions, sharing your ideas in class, and answering bonus questions, you will get chances to earn extra points. For permission to be absent from the class, you are expected to inform me in advance of your reasons for missing the class through email or in person. Points will be deducted for students that are absent without informing me or providing a proper reason.
- Group Presentation (30 %): The class will be divided into groups. Each group will be required to give a presentation on one of the 3 topics (i.e. gender differences in communication, cross-cultural communication, black culture, language and race) we have talked about in class. More details will be given on week 7.
- Listening Exam (30 %): On week 17 (a week before final exam week), there will be a listening exam. The content and the format will be similar to the topics and exercises we have worked on in earlier weeks. More details of the exam will be given a few weeks before the exam.
