課程概述

A major aim of this course is to help students transition from high school English to college/academic English. Thus, the course will introduce students to important cultural texts and ways to engage with these texts critically. Both academic and media texts, in print and audiovisual modes, will be used, in the form of guided reading and student presentations/discussions, individually as well as in pairs and groups. Another goal of the course is to help students improve their listening and speaking. For this component of the course, a variety of popular culture texts will be viewed and discussed. The medium of instruction for this course is English.

 Upon completion of the course, students should demonstrate improvement in these areas:
 Confidence in all four language areas and strategies for further development;
 Ability to read print and audiovisual texts with critical awareness;
 Ability to articulate own thoughts and opinions in a well-organized manner.

--The instructor will call the roll at the beginning of every class session. It is expected that you come to every class on time!

--Any absences will be reflected in your final grade. Missing 3 weeks of classes (including both authorized and unauthorized absences) will result in a failing grade for this course.

--Do not use any electronic devices during the 3-hour class period.

--There will be NO make-up midterm or final exams or for any other missed course work such as presentations.
