課程概述 |
The first semester of this Freshman English course focuses on improving students’ fluency and accuracy in language reception and production especially in the listening and speaking skills. Attentive listening is a critical skill that students must master in order to carry out meaningful conversations for the purpose of effective communication. Knowing that some students in their first semester at the university are not accustomed to speaking in English, the instructor will first build up students’ confidence in listening and speaking by having students converse in everyday contexts through a lot of in-class listening and speaking activities. Once students feel comfortable speaking up in such controlled class setting, they will then be guided to speak on more sophisticated topics. Readings of different genres will be chosen encouraging students to build vocabulary, think and speak on a wide range of topics, which eventually lead to students writing longer writing assignments. |
課程目標 |
This course aims to sharpen students’ four language skills: reading, writing, speaking (including pronunciation) and listening. Regarding writing, students will be asked to write at least 3 English compositions in the fall semester. This course is conducted entirely in English. Students are expected to speak to their peers, the teaching assistant and the instructor in English in the classroom. Since students only meet the instructor once a week for 3 hours, they are expected to take an active role in all class activities to maximize their learning opportunities. A student-centered approach will be adopted to allow students to make full use of class time to achieve their English-learning goals and course learning objectives. In addition, students should attend all classes and come to class on time and prepared. Attendance is taken seriously. Students who are too sick to come to class should provide the instructor with a doctor’s note. Students who missed more than 4 classes will automatically fail the course. Students who do not take the Midterm Exam and/or Final Exam are not allowed to pass the course either. |
課程要求 |
Attendance: As required by the school regulations, students are required to attend class each week. They need to inform the instructor if they need to be absent and they also need to provide evidence (such as medical evidence).
Writing Assignments: Three writing assignments (take-home or in-class) will be given in this semester. Specific details about each assignment will be given in class.
Midterm & Final: Midterm and final exams will include everything that is covered in class. Note: for the final exam, it is not cumulative.
CNN News: Each week, students will spend at least one hour watching CNN news. During this time, students will watch CNN clips without looking at the scripts. Then it will be followed by a weekly dictation quiz.
Pronunciation: Pronunciation will be taught by TA every three weeks. Handouts will be provided in class.
Speaking Practice: In order to improve students’ speaking proficiency, students will have to use their cellphones and record their speaking every other week. Students will have a chance to listen to their own speaking, find out mistakes and improve oral training throughout the first semester. More details will be given in class.
Note: Speaking practice is aimed to be done in class. Make sure to bring your cellphone (charged) to class. No late assignment will be accepted!
Weekly DJ: For each week, each group (2-3 people) should present the kind of music they like to the class. The presentation should be no more than 15 minutes.
