課程概述 |
Course Description:
This course bridges the gap between high school English and college English by introducing to students a wide array of topical issues and universal topics explored in Ted Talks and inspiring speeches. Students will enhance their listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities through in-class activities such as listening comprehension, group discussion, short presentations, scripted conversation, as well as take-home assignments such as essays. Class participation is of paramount importance. Please always feel encouraged to speak up and share your thoughts with your peers.

課程目標 |
Course Objective:
This course aims to develop students’ critical thinking, to build up their vocabulary, to impart knowledge about global issues to students, and to encourage them to see the beauty of inspiring speeches delivered in English.
Weekly topics are selected so as to reflect the 17 goals outlined by the United Nations according to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development accessible via https://sdgs.un.org/goals. In particular, attention has been given to “Reduced Inequalities” (weeks 2 to 5), “Health and Well-Being” (weeks 2 to 5), “No Poverty” (week 15), “Quality Education” (week 9), and “Gender Equality” (week 9).
* Necessary adjustments to the contents and requirements will be announced when the need arises due to further outbreaks of Covid-19. I solicit your understanding. |

Grading:
In-Class: 40%
? 1. Weekly discussions (8 times): written responses & on-stage presentations
Students are assigned to different groups for weekly discussion. The student(s) in charge of sharing the results of discussions with the entire class will receive an extra point.
? 2. Listening comprehension questions (8 times). To be handed in after each class.
? 3. Weekly conversation (8 times).
In the third hour, students are asked to practice speaking with at least 2 different peers. After each practice, your peer will put his/her signature on your worksheet. You will receive 1 point for each signature you receive. When you practice with me or our TA, you will receive an extra 1 point for your oral training session. Please do not leave until you have talked with either the instructor or the TA. Hand in the worksheet before you leave.
*Late submissions: late submissions of worksheets and other homework assignments are allowed within five working days after the deadline with point deductions. For each day past, a 20% deduction will apply.
Homework: 30%
? 4. Essays: Data Commentary (of 200 words; (10%)); An essay (of 100-200 words) will be included in the final exam. A bonus essay (100-200 words) can be submitted after the final exam.
Please do not copy and paste sentences written by others (from the Internet or other external resources) without due acknowledgement and citation. Plagiarism will result in not only a “zero” for the essay assignments but also downgrading of your overall grades for the semester.
? 5. Group Presentation (20%): 5-6 people per group. Cf. Topics below.
Exams: 30%: The midterm (15%) and final (15%) exams will cover all vocabulary entries listed on the worksheets as well as those introduced in class (via PowerPoint files, etc.).
*Bonus:
In accordance with the new policies implemented by the Center for Bilingual Education, National Taiwan University, students who attend six workshops or activities organized or subsidized by the CBE can receive a 6-point bonus (or one letter grade) to their overall grade. Further information can be found via https://cbe.ntu.edu.tw/ and NTU Cool when it becomes available.
Attendance Policy: Students must request leave of absence via “Student Leave Management” available from myNTU. Each student is allowed to apply for a leave of absence twice without point deductions. Please contact the instructor as well as the TA if you plan to be absent form the class. ATTN: More than five times of absence will result in failure of the course. Course Policies
Safety Measures: All participants of this course are required to wear facemasks during the class. In our weekly discussions and weekly dialogues, the extra use of plastic face shields is recommended. Further details regarding health and safety measures will be adjusted in the needs arise.
Late-submission: Any assignments submitted later than the deadline will receive a 20% deduction and must be re-submitted within five working days after the deadline.
Make-up exams: Make-up exams are not permitted. If your absence on the exam day is due to medical reasons, extenuating circumstances, or an official leave, you should produce relevant supporting documents such as a medical diagnosis by a physician. Make-up exams will be administered with a partially different version and should be done no later than five working days after the designated exam date. Make-up exams also results in 20% deduction of test scores.
Misconducts: The instructor, the TA, and the students jointly bear responsibilities for creating a fair and healthy learning environment for students. This class observes NTU’s policies regarding student misconducts. Please refer to 國立臺灣大學學則-111.01.14發布as our principal guideline. The following behavioral incidents will constitute cheating in this classroom, including but not limited to significant plagiarism (a similarity of >20%), cheating while sitting in an exam (in-class or online), copying and pasting from external sources in an online exam, or discussing with peers during exams that are not open-book.
Plagiarism: Using others’ works, sentences, or ideas as your own without proper acknowledgement or citation will be viewed as plagiarism. Failures to give credit to the materials you use in essay questions, projects, or presentations will result in a score of zero for that assignment. If plagiarism is noted multiple times, your departmental office will be contacted for further action.
Cheating: Cheating will result in the failure of this course. Guidelines for actions against cheating outlined in the following document will be observed in this class. Please refer to 國立臺灣大學學生個人獎懲辦法as our principal guideline. |
