This course is designed to introduce NTU students to university-level English. It will not only prepare students for the General English Proficiency Test through tutorials featuring each part of the first stage of the GEPT high-intermediate level test, but it will also facilitate students to listen, speak, read, and write in English through exercises extending from the vocabulary, grammar, and critical reviews of four Disney animated sensations, including Mulan (1998), Pocahontas (1995), The Lion King (1994), and 101 Dalmatians (1961). Students will have a chance to apply the language skills they have learned through ten listening transcriptions, two midterms, one essay, several individual and group presentations and, near the end of this course, through a group presentation in the form of a short play. Students are expected to attend regularly, to read with passion and curiosity, and to bring an open mind to course assignments and class discussions. We will reflect on our previously held commonsense ideas and test them against our course readings.
