課程概述 Course Description
This class will provide preparation and practice for the use of English-language skills in both academic and real-life contexts and situations. The ultimate goal of this class is to increase communication ability—both in speaking and writing, but to reach that goal, students must WANT to improve their English and be motivated in pursuing every opportunity for learning. SPEAKING and LISTENING are the most important aspects of language learning, and, in this class, students will be expected to speak informally to each-other and to their teacher EVERY DAY (formal presentations—to the entire class, as well as in smaller groups—are also required). Also, your instructor will only speak English to you, and it is important that you understand what he is saying, and that you ask questions when you do not understand. One of the most valuable aspects of having a teacher who is native English-speaker in your class is that he/she can help you with pronunciation and can present you with a native speaking-style; however, to make the most of this opportunity you must be an active, self-directed listener and speaker. READING is also a vital part of language learning, and you will be asked to read articles and build your vocabulary in-class and for homework every day. The class readings have been specifically chosen by your instructor to encourage class discussion and lead into writing assignments. WRITING and GRAMMAR, being the most advanced aspects of language learning, will also be covered regularly in this class, and students will be asked to practice these skills both in class and at home.

課程目標 Course Objectives
The goals of the course are to introduce students to college-level writing and critical reading, to give students instruction and practice in writing and reading college-level essays, and to make students aware of how various audiences and rhetorical situations call for different choices in language, structure, format, and tone. Reading assignments stress how and why authors make rhetorical choices and are designed both to immerse students in written language and to develop critical thinking, reading, and writing skills.

課程要求 Requirements
In this class, students will need to complete at least three (200 word minimum) formal, out-of-class essays; maintain a weekly writing journal; memorize and recite one poem per week (to demonstrate oral pronunciation proficiency); pass weekly quizzes on vocabulary and class-readings; and pass larger examinations covering grammar and writing. Students will also be expected to lead one class discussion, as well as to actively participate in class activities.

參考書目(教科書)Textbook and References
Course readings and materials will be provided by the instructor but students will need one (College-level) English dictionary, as well as one notebook for journal writing.
評量方式 Grading
Grades will be broken down on a 1000-point scale: 100 points for each formal essay (300 total); 150 points for both the mid-term and final exam (300 total); 100 points for reading/vocabulary quizzes (13 total –dropping 1 lowest grade); 100 points for leading class discussion; 100 points for participation in weekly poetry readings; and 100 points for participation and peer-review writing workshops.
