課程概述

This compulsory course attempts to train your overall ability of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. This course aims to train the students to develop critical thinking through various challenging stories and academic articles. The students will be introduced to a wide range of literature including canonical and non-canonical short stories written in English, famous British and American poems, classic poetic songs in English. As the majority of students are from engineering and law, the critical essays are related to these intersected fields. The students will have to produce a one-page response journal biweekly based on the reading of these texts. The students will be placed in several groups that are obliged to introduce the assigned story to other peer students. Remember that this is NOT a high school English class where you used to cram grammar, memorize proverbs, or rely solely on lectures. If you are not accustomed to critical thinking and writing, do not take this course. If you do not have enough self-discipline, you are also discouraged from taking the course. The three-hour course is in general divided into three sections: student presentation, in-class discussion, and poetry/song appreciation. We will also experiment with cross-cultural teaching model by using an interface to share ideas with engineering students from Concordia University, Canada. This will certainly open up the students’ horizon in engaging in dialogue with students from other countries. The overall aim of this course, ideally speaking, is to explore your creativity, sharpen your critical thinking, and build up your confidence.

課程要求
1. If you are absent more than three times (including three times without legitimate proof), you will automatically flunk the course.
2. Any late submission of journal (not even one day late) after the due date will not be accepted and will receive a grade of zero for that assignment.
3. I have zero tolerance with plagiarism. If you are caught plagiarizing in your assignment, you will automatically flunk the course and will be reported to the University for such unethical academic misconduct.
4. All assignments have to be word-processed, double-spaced.
5. Since the class is not scheduled during lunch or dinner time, the students are discouraged from eating (dry, light food ok) in class.
6. The students are not allowed to use electronic devices (e.g., laptop, iPhone) in class.
7. Out of courtesy, if you cannot make it to class, please inform the instructor beforehand, not afterwards.
8. Also out of courtesy or self-awareness, if possible, please wash up or wear deodorant before coming to class.
