課程概述 |
This class will provide preparation and practice for the use of English-language skills in both academic and real-life contexts and situations. The ultimate goal of this class is to increase communication ability–both in speaking and writing, but to reach that goal, students must WANT to improve their English and be motivated in pursuing every opportunity for learning. SPEAKING and LISTENING are the most important aspects of language learning, and, in this class, students will be expected to speak informally to each-other and to their teacher (formal presentations–to the entire class, as well as in smaller groups–are also required). Also, your instructor will only speak English to you, and it is important that you understand what he is saying, and that you ask questions when you do not understand.
One of the most valuable aspects of having a teacher who is native English-speaker in your class is that he/she can help you with pronunciation and can present you with a native speaking-style; however, to make the most of this opportunity you must be an active, self-directed listener and speaker. READING is also a vital part of language learning, and you will be asked to read articles and build your vocabulary in-class and for homework every week. The class readings have been specifically chosen by your instructor to encourage class discussion and lead into writing assignments. WRITING and GRAMMAR, being the most advanced aspects of language learning, will also be covered regularly in this class.

Grades will be calculated on a 1000-point scale: 100 points each for [3] final essays (300 total); (100 total) points for the final vocabulary exam–this will be not just about defining words, but more about prefixes, suffixes, roots and word forms; (100 total) points for quizzes–quizzes will mostly be over course readings but could also cover writing and grammatical exercises; (300 total) points for speaking activities: 50 for leading [1] class discussion, 50 for [1] creative project, 50 for poetry readings (2 at 25 points a piece), 50 each for [1] midterm group presentation on a person, 50 for presenting 15-20 minutes of popular media to the class, and 50 for a media journal; (100 total) points for homework–this will mostly be vocabulary practice but will also include short writing and grammatical exercises; and (100 total) points for participation–this will be counted towards all in-class activities, but is especially weighted on in-class writing and peer-review workshops, small group exercises, and discussion.
