課程概述 |
The first semester of this Freshman English course focuses on improving students’ fluency and accuracy in language reception and production especially in the listening and speaking skill areas. Attentive listening is a critical skill that students must master in order to carry out meaningful conversations for the purpose of effective communication. Knowing that some students in their first semester at the university are not accustomed to speaking in English, the instructor will first build up students’ confidence in listening and speaking by having students converse in everyday contexts through a lot of in-class listening and speaking activities. Once students feel comfortable speaking up in such controlled class setting, they will then be guided to speak on more sophisticated topics. Readings of different genres will be chosen encouraging students to build vocabulary, and to think and speak on a wide range of topics. Throughout the course, students will be keeping journals for the purpose of developing the habit of writing in English, which will later help them to work on longer writing assignments from single paragraphs to 5-paragraph essays.
Much class time will be devoted to student-led activities allowing students to speak up in a controlled, relaxed atmosphere. A variety of activities, such as group interactions, pair work, and class discussions, are used to introduce new material and reinforce material taught. Outside of class, students will have the opportunity to work individually and in groups to develop the concept of team spirit. |
課程目標 |
One of the goals of this course is to help students bridge the gap between high school English and college English. Under the instructor’s guidance, it is with hope that students can make use of their already well-learned grammar and vocabulary to orally express themselves clearly and effectively, and to produce well-planned writing assignments at the college level. Listening and reading serve the purpose of internalizing correct sentence structures and patterns used in speaking and writing and will therefore be much emphasized. Through in-class discussions on different topics, students have the chance to being exposed to different kinds of knowledge necessary to develop critical thinking and academic skills. These, along with listening, speaking, reading, and writing, will be valuable skills that students need to be equipped with to continue with their college work throughout their university lives. |
課程要求 |
This course is conducted entirely in English. Students are required to speak to their peers and instructor in English in the classroom. Since students only meet the instructor once a week for 3 hours, students are expected to take an active role in all class activities to maximize their learning opportunities. A student-centered approach will be adopted to allow students to make full use of class time to achieve their English-learning goals and course learning objectives. Students who are not serious in their learning please do not consider signing up this course.
Students should attend all classes and come to class on time and prepared. Attendance is taken seriously. Students who “need” to be late or absent should notify the instructor at least 2 days in advance. No make-up quizzes and exams are allowed. Late homework will NOT be accepted. Students missing 4 or more classes automatically fail the course. Students who do not take the Midterm Exam and/or Final Exam are not allowed to pass the course. |
