This course aims to help students develop critical thinking abilities through guided reading and discussion of thought-provoking texts. Class materials include writings by prominent contemporary authors and books that touch upon issues that are shaping our world today. (In the spring semester readings may include literary works.) The class will also help students gain a better sensibility to the English language and build a wider vocabulary. The listening materials are for the most part culled from authentic audio-visual recordings such as interviews, speeches, and newscast.
A typical week will look like this:
**The first hour – listening session. The listening activity is for the most part independent of the class readings. Almost all the listening materials are available on the Internet, which means you will be able to retrieve and listen to them outside of class. In class, you may be asked to write down responses to a recording. These responses will be collected as a record of your attendance but will not be graded.
**The second & third hours – reading session: discussion of reading material. The instructor will provide background information and questions to facilitate class discussion. To help you gain a better command of the language, the instructor will also spend considerable time explaining the usages, connotations or etymology of particular words. There will also be group or class discussion of the text. |
課程要求 |
1. Conscientious preparation, regular attendance, and active class participation. Preparation prior to the class meeting is essential. So is participation in class discussion. Two absences may be allowed without penalty during the semester.
2. Listening homework. One transcription assignment during the semester. It must be word-processed and submitted in hard copy form in class on the due day.
3. Participation in one of two class debates. Two debates will be scheduled for the second half of the semester. At each debate, the class is to be divided into two groups and everyone is expected to be present. However, each person will sign up for either event where s/he will play the part of an active debater.
4. Midterm exam.
5. Final exam. |
