課程概述 |
This course bridges the gap between high school English and college English by introducing to students a wide array of topical, practical, and universal topics as explored by Ted talks and world classics. Students will enhance their listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities through in-class activities such as listening and reading comprehension, group discussion, group presentation, scripted conversation, as well as take-home assignments such as essays. Class participation is of paramount importance. Please feel encouraged to speak up and share your thoughts with your peers. |

Grading:
1. Weekly discussions (maximum 5(6) x 11 times = 55 points):
Students are assigned to different groups. All group members grade each other anonymously on a scale of 1 to 5. The student in charge of sharing the result of discussions with the entire class will receive an extra point.
2. Listening comprehension questions (3 questions x 11 times = 33 points): To be handed in after each class.
3. Weekly conversations (5(6) points x 9 times = 45 points):
In the third hour, students are asked to practice speaking with at least 5 different peers. After each practice, your peer will put his/her signature on your study sheet. You will receive 1 point for each signature you receive. If you practice with me or our TA, you will receive an extra 0.5 point for your oral training session.
4. Reading questions (3 questions x 9 times = 27 points)
5. Essays (10 x 3 times = 30 points)
6. Mid-term Presentation (30 x 1 time = 30 points)
7. Final: Drama Performance (30 x 1 time = 30 points)
Total Score: 55 + 33 + 45 + 27 + 30 + 30 + 30 = 250 points.
If with bonus: 66 +33 +54 +27 +30 +30 +30 = 270 points.
At the end of the semester, students will be ranked by their total score. The teacher will compose a diagram of distribution and give “A+” to those whose scores fall within the highest-ranking majority as shown on the diagram, “A” to the second majority group, “A-” to the third. Those who keep records of absence, who show lack of participation, or demonstrate a strong aversion to learning will likely receive a “B+” or below. |
