課程概述

Course Description:
The purpose of this course is twofold: (1) to further improve your listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities in English, with special emphasis on listening fluency and comprehension development, and (2) to help you develop academic skills that can help you transit successfully from high school to university classes. To achieve these goals, you need to work both in and out of class. You need to participate actively in class discussions, group exercises, and various workshops. You also need to complete three learning projects to demonstrate your efforts to practice what you have learned in class.

The purpose of this course is twofold: (1) to further improve your listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities in English, with special emphasis on listening fluency and comprehension development, and (2) to help you develop academic skills that can help you transit successfully from high school to university classes.
 
課程要求
Attendance and participation (35%):
- It is important for you to attend class regularly and punctually. Proof must be provided for sick leaves or absences for university business. All requests for leave must be made through the school system (學生請假系統).Unexcused absences will be penalized. Anyone missing the equivalence of five weeks or more of class will automatically fail this course.
- You need to participate actively in the class activities. At the end of each class, you will answer “exit ticket” questions to help you reflect upon your learning. You will write a self-assessment report at the end of the semester to describe what you have done in this class and your progress.

Quizzes (25%):
- A weekly listening quiz will be administered at the beginning of the class. No make-up quizzes will be permitted. Ten best scores of these quizzes will be worth 25% of the final grade.

Learning projects (40%):
- You will bring an object that is meaningful to you into the class. You will introduce the object in a short presentation of 2 minutes to four different groups of classmates. You will be asked by your classmates various questions about the object. All assignments related to the project will be worth 10% of your final grade.
- You will do a 12-day challenge on any idea of your choice. You need to find a suitable challenge and do your challenge every day for 12 days and record your progress (via notes, pictures, videos, etc.) throughout the 12 days. After you complete your project, you will give a 2-minute presentation on your project to the whole class. The presentation will be peer-reviewed. All assignments related to the project will be worth 10% of your final grade.
- You will give a 5-minute presentation (informative or persuasive) on any topic of your choice to the whole class at the end of the semester. The presentation will be peer-reviewed. All assignments related to the project will be worth 20% of your final grade.
