課程概述 |
The purpose of this course is twofold: (1) to further improve your listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities in English. There will be a particular emphasis placed on listening comprehension and developing your speaking fluency; (2) to help you develop academic skills needed for your success in college. To achieve these goals, you must work both in and outside of the classroom. You need to participate actively in class discussions, pair and group discussions, and online learning. You also need to complete projects and assignments to demonstrate that you are practicing what you have learned in class. |
課程目標 |
After completing this course, students are expected to reach the CEFR B2 level and be able to:
*Understand discourses on various topics and use a variety of strategies to achieve comprehension.
*Take advantage of the abundant multimedia materials available online to facilitate autonomous English learning.
*Participate effectively in group discussions and give clear and effective oral presentations on familiar topics in English. |
課程要求 |
Attendance and Participation (30%)
It is important for you to attend class regularly and punctually. You must provide proof if you will be missing class due to taking sick leave or attending to university business. All requests for leave must be made through the school system (台大學生請假系統). If you miss the equivalence of five or more weeks of the class, you will automatically fail this course.
You must actively participate in the class activities. Many of those activities require you to listen and talk to one another. To avoid unnecessary distraction, no smartphones or other personal electronic devices are allowed in class except when they are integrated into a specific learning activity. At the end of each class, you will answer “exit ticket” questions to help you reflect upon your learning. You will also write a self-assessment report at the end of the semester to evaluate your progress and describe what you have done in this class.
Listening and Speaking Assignments (25%)
To help you improve your listening comprehension and speaking fluency, there are regular listening and speaking assignments. You will watch English videos or listen to English podcasts weekly and analyze their transcripts to acquire useful words and expressions. You will also prepare a short talk on an assigned topic each week. You will make a recording of the talk and be given the opportunity to share your ideas in class. All assignments must be submitted by 11 p.m. on the Saturday of the week it is due. No late work will be accepted.
Show & Tell (10%)
You will bring an object that is meaningful to you into the class. You will introduce the object in a short presentation of 2 minutes to four different groups of classmates. You will also be asked various questions by your classmates about the object for 1 minute. The presentation will be peer-reviewed.
Final Presentation (20%)
You will give a 5- minute presentation on any topic of your choice to the whole class at the end of the semester (15%). The presentation will be peer-reviewed. All assignments related to the project will also be graded (5%).
Listening & Speaking Tests (15%)
You will take a listening test at the beginning of the semester to identify your strengths and weaknesses (5%) and take another test at the end of the semester to see how much you have improved during the course (10%).
Extra Credit Activities
You can earn extra credit--up to 3 points--by participating in English activities organized by the Center of Bilingual Education(台大雙語中心). These activities will usually be announced on the Freshman English Facebook page. You need to submit a reflection of 300 words on what you have learned from the activity. Depending on the teacher’s arrangement, you will also be invited to share your experience in class or to record a short video. Each activity is worth 0.5 points. You can earn up to 1 point for the same type of activity (eg. listening to a speech, participating in a workshop, entering a competition).
