課程概述

Course Description:
The purpose of this course is twofold: (1) to further improve your listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities in English, with special emphasis on listening fluency and comprehension development, and (2) to help you develop academic skills that can help you transit successfully from high school to university classes. To achieve these goals, you need to work both in and out of class. You need to participate actively in class discussions, group exercises and on-line learning. You also need to complete projects and assignments to demonstrate your efforts to practice what you have learned in class.

加簽說明:
本門課會加簽最多5名同學,加簽順序為1)理學院與公衛學院大一學生 2)理學院與公衛學院其他年級學生 3)其他學院學生。已寫信給教師的同學,若有成功加簽,會於9/20收到授權碼,若無收到代表未加簽成功。

其他理學院與公衛學院有意加簽的同學可直接填寫加簽意願單,若有9/20有同學放棄加簽,剩餘名額會於9/21通知,若未收到通知,代表已無法加簽。

Attendance and participation (25%)
*It is important for you to attend class regularly and punctually. Proof must be provided for sick leaves or absences for university business. All requests for leave must be made through the school system (學生請假系統).Unexcused absences will be penalized. Anyone missing the equivalence of five weeks or more of class will automatically fail this course.
*You need to participate actively in the class activities. You may receive extra assignments to make up for any missed classes. At the end of each class, you will answer “exit ticket” questions to help you reflect upon your learning. You will write a self-assessment report at the end of the semester to describe what you have done in this class and your progress.

Listening Assignments (20%)
*To help you improve your listening comprehension, you need to listen to English regularly outside of class. You will watch a video clip or listen to a podcast every week and analyze its transcript to acquire new words and expressions. You will also be given the opportunity to share what you have watched with your classmates in class.

Writing Exercises (15%)
*You will complete three writing exercises in class, two of which will help you prepare for your presentations.

Presentations (25%)
*You will bring an object that is meaningful to you into the class. You will introduce the object in a short presentation of 2 minutes to four different groups of classmates. You will also be asked by your classmates various questions about the object for 1 minute. The presentation will be peer-reviewed. (10%)
*You will give a 5- minute presentation (informative or persuasive) on any topic of your choice to the whole class at the end of the semester. The presentation will be peer-reviewed. (15%)

Listening tests (10%)
*You will take a listening test at the beginning of the semester to identify your strengths and weaknesses and take another test at the end of the semester to see how much you have improved during the course.

Speaking tests (5%)
*You will take two speaking tests to assess your speaking proficiency, one in class and one outside of class.
