課程概述

This is a one-semester course that presents a survey of themes and approaches related to globalization in the long eighteenth century (roughly 1680-1830), centering in particular on the period 1780-1830. This course focuses on the literary and cultural representations of rights, fashion (material culture), gendered identities, science, and the imagining of the future in this period. It aims to provide students with a better understanding of how global history/cosmopolitanism and a universalist model has emerged and been represented in literary texts in the period. Texts discussed in class will include pamphlets, poetry, essays, and fiction. Students will study works in relation to their historical and cultural contexts. This course hopes to expose students to an interdisciplinary treatment of the texts and to introduce different ways of understanding eighteenth-century literature.

* 107-1學年修習過「瑪麗雪萊與十九世紀小說」課程之同學,因文本內容重疊,請勿修習本課程。
* This course will be lectured in both English and Mandarin.

課程目標
Students will gain knowledge about 18th and 19th-century writing and culture, and also a broad understanding of some distant (or lesser-known) texts in or out the literary canon. By the end of this course, students will develop skills in expressing ideas about literature and culture in this period, and will acquire a better understanding of the links between literature of the long eighteenth century and themes/subjects including rights, national and gendered identities, material culture, and science.
