課程概述 |
General Introduction:
The course is as much a drama class as a cultural studies class for it aims to explore the intersections of gender and modernity through extensive reading of plays written by American women dramatists in the first half of the 20th century, supplemented by studies of iconic women, especially actresses and artists of the same era. Starting with the conflicted conceptions of femininity in the Jamesian lady Isabel Archer in the Gilded Age, we explore the shifting patterns and changing tropes of modernity and femininity in the early decades of the twentieth century, focusing on gender issues crossed by topical issues such as suffrage, psychoanalysis, race, sexuality, class, and war.
|
課程目標 |
Goal:
Students are required to conduct intensive textual analysis and interpret the play texts through a comprehensive survey of the gender and social relations at the time. By the end of the course they are expected to acquire extensive knowledge of the key women dramatists and artists of America of the first four decades of the 20th century, as well as an intimate knowledge of theories of proto-feminism, modernity and modernism.
