Course Description:
This course is designed to help students to strengthen their language skills through studying and performing selected dramatic scenes in the English language. Throughout the semester the students will be exposed to a good number of shorter plays—some by world-class dramatists like Anton Chekhov, George Bernard Shaw, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Brian Friel, Peter Shaffer, Harold Pinter, David Hare, Marsha Norman, etc., and some by brilliant but less well-known playwrights of educational drama. While every student in the class needs to study the scripts before coming to class, different groups of students will receive assignments and give reading performances in turn. (Students that elect this course must be prepared to spend considerable extra time for line learning and rehearsals in order to do well in these class performances.) It is our belief that hands-on performance exercises are superb means for language improvement. Frequent quizzes will be held to check on students’ progress in vocabulary building. While these shorter plays are treated primarily as material for English learning, we will keep in view their interest as dramatic texts as we go through the plays together.
This course should appeal to students who are interested in learning English through playacting, students who are enthusiastic about drama in general, and students who are eager to explore shorter plays for their pedagogical potential.
