Course description:
The survey course samples the major British dramas that had crucially impacted the development of contemporary British theatre since WWII. It took as its departure point Terence Rattigan’s representative play, to serve as a template against which the Angry Young Man movement revolted. The pivotal year of 1956 will be seen as the watershed marking the divergent strands of British drama tracing back to the first performances of Osborne’s Look Back in Anger, Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, and Brecht’s Mother Courage; leading to the development of kitchen sink realism, theatre of the absurd, and politically engaged theater respectively.
