課程概述 |
This course aims to examine a particular line of defining and applying the notion of the sublime. It looks into how artists and philosophers explore our capacity of dealing with mixed feelings while viewing and contemplating art and nature. It is also set in the context of current neuropsychological discourses on mirror neurons that have actually revised certain conventional critical tools such as intentionality and subjectivity. The main focus is on comparing and contrasting different procedures with which we can follow in order to (1) appreciate the subtleties of the sublime and the beautiful; (2) transform our feelings of fear and anxiety into euphoria and knowledge. Apart from gathering ideas from the classic texts and scientific papers, students will also devise their own strategies of engaging with strange details or characters found in artistic texts. All in all, this course enlarges on the usefulness of studying philosophical aesthetics in our times. |
課程目標 |
This course aims to shed light on certain aspects of art: (1) how we can make good use of the changing, non-adaptive and non-exclusive features of syntagmatic combinations so as to lead a creative life; (2) how these features serve in giving rise to certain illusions from which we would gain pride and joy; (3) how we can conceive our emotions as a wide range of varieties that we seek to justify and integrate while working out various sorts of play scenarios. |
課程要求 |
Students are required to (1) preview contents for each week; (2) participate rigorously in class discussions; (3) answer essay questions which encourage them to absorb fruitfully assigned reading materials; (4) present their term projects. |
