課程概述

In this course, we will go through the works by various philosophers who present dramatically different conclusions concerning the following issues. Is knowledge merely justified true belief? Could it be that we are living in the Matrix? Are we really justified in believing in the way the world is? Do I have a soul that can be separated from my body? Is my mind just my brain? Is my mind merely something like a computer program? Can there be perfect zombies, which are not distinguishable from normal human beings by their appearance and behavior but somehow have no minds? Does a perfect robot (which is indistinguishable from normal human beings by its appearance and behavior) have a mind? Are we free to make choices? Does the total past and present determine the future? If so, are we free to make choices or to bring about different futures? If not, what’s the point of scientific prediction about the matters like whether it will rain tomorrow? Is it possible to travel back into the past and kill your grandfather before he gave birth to your father? Is it morally wrong to tell a lie to make other people happy when there is no negative consequence in any way?

課程目標
The goal of this course is to learn:
(a) to understand the philosophical works and how philosophers ask questions, (b) to analyze and critically evaluate these philosophical viewpoints, and (c) to develop and articulate your own views on the issues.
課程要求
To achieve the course’s goal, the course relies heavily on multimedia resources, dialogues, discussions, and presentations. Hence, each student is expected to read the assignments before class, attend every class, and participate in both in-class discussions and group discussions.

In addition, there will be ONLINE pre-lecture quizzes, designed to test whether you have read the assignments the lectures are about. A quiz consists of two yes/no questions.

The midterm and final exams will be held ONLINE.

As for group discussion and presentation, the class will be divided into 5 sets, each of which has 5 groups. Each group has to work out some way to discuss after class. For every discussion topic, your group will have to check ChatGPT's answer first, then come up with your group's own, different answer, and finally comapre your group's answer with ChatGPT's and argue why your group's is better. Presentation (and debate) shall go by sets. Different groups in a set will have to fight each other. Each set has to work out on its own a time/place for presentation (and debate) to take place. Presentations shall be filmed and uploaded to NTUCOOL as a proof.
