課程概述

The natural sciences such as biology, chemistry, and physics explain much about our world. They also explain much about our human body. There is now also neuroscience and brain science. But what about the mind? What about consciousness, feeling, thought, value, and morality? Can the natural sciences explain these too? Or will there always remain a GAP separating the physical from the mental? To better understand these problems, we will read a relatively new book by Thomas Nagel: “MIND AND COSMOS, Why the Materialist Neo-Darwinian Conception of Nature Is Almost Certainly False,” OUP 2012. The book has only 130 pages, and the print is generous. Thus, we can read the whole book carefully in one semester. No previous knowledge is required. But it will not be easy. It is not an easy book. If we finish early, we might read an essay from Nagel’s earlier book “Mortal Questions,” CUP 1979, for instance the essay “Moral Luck.”
