Course Description

Since Freud’s discovery of the unconscious mind, psychoanalysis has developed into a diverse range of theoretical orientations and has become a shared intellectual resource in Western culture. Psychoanalysis poses a major challenge for philosophers: once we accept the cardinal premise of psychoanalysis, that there are unconscious forces lying behind our thought and action, how can we maintain our faith in free will and autonomous rationality?
The first part of this course deals with some of the most important presuppositions of psychoanalysis. Based on this primary knowledge of psychoanalytical theories, we will then go on to rethink the nature of rationality, free will, morality, and of intersubjective relations. 

Course Objective
Knowledge about the primary theoretical presuppositions of psychoanalysis.
Ability to reflect on the classical philosophical questions from a psychoanalytical perspective.
