課程概述

This course introduces the history of theater development in Taiwan over more than 400 years. Explore the trajectories of theater activities in Taiwan; conversely, try to see "Taiwan" from these trajectories. The foundation of Taiwanese culture is an agricultural society built by pioneers who were mainly immigrants from Fujian and Guangdong. Drama activities mainly focus on religion, festival celebrations, and life rituals, with a strong folk flavor. As an island located on the edge of the Asian continent, Taiwan has been the turning point and stop-loss point of political struggles many times, and has experienced multiple regime changes, thus injecting many new artistic elements. The development of Taiwan's drama is closely linked to its historical destiny, which also shapes its artistic characteristics. 

課程目標
There are 16 weeks in this semester (including midterm exams and final exams):
(With appropriate video descriptions, selected excerpts, and regular key reviews and discussions) This course will introduce the development process of Taiwanese drama into five stages according to the artistic connotation and characteristics and changes of the times, which are:
1. Taiwanese drama from the Dutch period to the early Qing Dynasty (1624-1795)
2. Taiwanese drama in the late Qing Dynasty (1796-1894)
3. Taiwanese drama during the Japanese occupation (1895-1944)
4. Postwar Taiwanese Drama (1945-1979)
5. Taiwanese drama since the 1980s (1980-2013)
In the diachronic observation of drama, the main body of opera types is placed (including Nanguan system operas (Nanguan opera, Gaojia opera); Chaozhou opera; Beiguan system operas (Beiguan opera, Siping opera); Gezi opera; Hakka opera; puppet show (shadow play, palm play, puppet show); small plays (bamboo horse show, cart and drum show, tea picking show), etc. As well as drama and non-drama (opera, dance drama, musical and other forms of drama) of modern drama, theater art subjects and works The main body of literature also introduces the discovery, construction and application of Taiwanese drama literature. And through "field operation practice": leading students to understand drama types from the environment, confirming the development of Taiwan's drama history.
