課程概述

Traditional theatrical design is primarily taught using a theater as it’s starting point. There is an increasing interest in moving theatrical experiences out of fixed theaters and into non-traditional spaces. SITE SPECIFIC DESIGN is a mid-level design class that will introduce theatrical design students to the fundamentals of working on a site-specific project.

The class will examine what exactly site-specific work is, look at its history, examine 2 forms it often takes in more depth, and highlight not only its unique advantages but also the challenges and pitfalls of working in found spaces as a designer. Through brief lectures, guest speakers, and examining two past productions as case studies, we will help prepare the designer to work on a site-specific production. Students will then apply this information to three class projects.

課程目標
The objective of this course is to introduce young designers to Site Specific Theater making: its’ roots, different forms, and unique opportunities & challenges. The class should, in a rudimentary way, help them create a process that spring from, and is in dialog with, the space itself.

Perhaps more importantly than answering HOW we use this form, the class will ask the student WHY we choose site-specific work- challenging ourselves to move past the trend and into the heart of what can make this work so indelible.

An additional objective is to have the designers bring this fresh perspective about space and environment back into their work in the traditional theater, recognizing that creating a dynamic audience/ actor interaction is ALWAYS part of theater making.

※Class Projects

POEM OR SHORT STORY PROJECT
This will be a fast, intuitive project where students are to use a poem (or song that they are familiar with) and find a location on campus to enact a simple performance done by them (and/or1 other person).

SINGLE LOCATION PROJECT
This is a longer project that will use an existing script (or another text the student gets approved) as its’ text. The designer will find an existing space somewhere in Taiwan that they can do (2) site visits to. The student will then conceptualize how they utilize the existing space to perform the play in and about. Designers will give a presentation taking us on a journey of their theatrical experience. Using ground plans, schematics, research, white models and renderings, the designer will help us understand as fully as possible what the experience of the audience will be.

ROAMING LOCATION PROJECT
This is a longer project that will use an existing novel (or some other conceptual idea the student gets approved) as its’ text. The designer will find an existing building or location that has a variety of different spaces in it. The space can be anywhere in the world, provided they have enough info about the different spaces. The student will then conceptualize how they utilize the various spaces and have audiences roam throughout the spaces in an organized and systematic way. Designers will give a presentation taking us on a journey of their theatrical experience. Using ground plans, schematics, research, white models and renderings, the designer will help us understand as fully as possible what the experience of the audience will be from their initial arrival, through the various rooms or stages of the production as well as how the audience will leave the space. This presentation should be both artistically compelling but also have a clear eye on the logistically challenges and how the design can be implemented.
