The course is aimed at providing students with a general, fundamental and updated knowledge of Buddhist canon formation from perspectives of the historiography of history and the Buddhist studies. There are a few English works on this subject; I will supplement readings with select Chinese materials. The main focuses of this course will be on (1) the diversification of Buddhist canon in the Buddhist traditions, Chinese, Theravadin and Tibetan, (2) the formation of a Buddhist canon in relation to sectarian position, (3) the scriptural transmission, particularly in Chinese Buddhist tradition, (4) assessing the measurement of a text as “authentic.”
The present syllabus is tentative. The content may be changed according to the practical needs of students.

 The objectives
1. After the study of this class, students have a picture of the nature of Buddhist texts, with which to write research papers in relation to the Buddhist subject.
2. Students can use digital tools to write research papers.
 
課程要求
 Requirements
1. Students should consult with me about the possible subject for the term paper from the beginning of the semester. A proposal with an annotated bibliography for the term paper is required to submit by the end of the 10th week.
2. By the end of semester, students have to turn in his or her paper. Send the proposal (Do not exceed 8 pages) and the paper (Do not exceed 20 pages) to the course website by the due date. The paper is double-spaced, A 4 paper size, and in Word file.
3. In the second-half of each class, one student is assigned to lead the discussion and one student to respond it. It starts at the 3rd week. The student leading the discussion shall upload his or her comments, questions etc. to the course website by the preceding Mondayt midnight. The other students and Iare able to read them before class.
4. Students should read assigned reading materials before going to the class.

 Required Reading:
1. The Craft of Research by W. C. Booth, G. G Colomb, J M Williams (Chicago UP, 1995). There is a Chinese translation of it. Yet, it is made on the second edition of the book. Read the third edition (without the Chinese translation)
2. Lean to use Endnote to write academic papers.
3. Many assigned readings are available in the digital bases. Download them by yourself. A few of them will be provided in the class.
