課程概述

This lecture course is a general survey of traditional Chinese culture from prehistory to the end of Ming dynasty (1644). Focus will be put on cultural and political histories and their interactions, while the economic and social backgrounds of them will also be discussed. We will analyze the formation and characteristics of all the major historical periods of the long adventure of the Chinese history so as to learn the elements, features, patterns and changes of this most endurable civilization. Comparative approach will also be used in order to give the students a better sense of the uniqueness of Chinese civilization and the meaning of human civilization in general.

1. An in-depth analysis of one of the topics taught in this course. Students should access regional libraries for related materials. 4-5 pages. Paper due: June, 1..

2 A final examination which covers all the topics taught or discussed in this course.

* All papers must be typed out in double space, and follow the written styles suggested by the Chicago Manual of Style.

Grades

Grades will be based on papers, final examination and contributions to discussions in the course.
