We will explore the relationships of the arts, urbanization, culture and society of Paris from circa 1750 to 1940. Major topics include masterpieces of art, salon exhibitions, architecture, urban planning, caricature, photography, popular imagery and fashion. Along with presentation and term paper, students should collaborate in editing a two-part album of Tableaux de Paris, 1700-1940 with well-written commentaries. The course is to serve as solid foundation for further exploration in urban culture and society.
