課程概述 |
This course, a sequence of 史學英文寫作 I, continues to train students to summarize, report, criticize, and conduct research. During the first-half of the semester, we will rehearse skills in various modes of writing, including but not confined to: (1) descriptive (detailed description), (2) analytic (definition, comparison and contrast, review or thematic analysis of a creative work or a historical essay), (3) argumentative (essay questions, causality, and enumeration) and (4) creative (figure of speech, analogy, story writing / anecdotes, etc.). The second-half of the semester places emphasis on the step-by-step process involved in writing a research paper. Just as what we covered in previous course, grammar review and vocabulary potency will still be a valuable adjunct to this semester’s training. Although our course aims at the upper-division writing breadth accomplishment, students who do not take史學英文寫作 I are impartially welcome.

Short Essays:
For all students, two papers of around 3 pages constitute the main substance of the first-half of the semester. Themes for writing will be individually chosen from a book review, statement of purpose or autobiography, and writing about an image.
A Final Term Paper:
For graduate students, it is necessary to fulfill a thesis-support final paper of 8-10 pages, citing at least 10 academic sources. For undergraduates, such a term paper, though strongly recommended, is not compulsory. Undergraduates have the choice to produce a lengthier term paper or two short essays by practicing related tactics and skills.
Online discussion:
Groups of students will be responsible to post a one-page reflection with questions and topics worth discussing related to sample readings and writing techniques assigned prior to class session.
Oral Presentations:
Each student is required to do two group presentations respectively on writing techniques and sample readings. Students who work on a final term paper will have to give an oral presentation in the end of the semester.
