課程概述

This course will examine the history the Holocaust from its early roots, through its immediate origins, the implementation of the “Final Solution of the Jewish Question,” and the aftermath of the Shoah. We will closely analyze such topics as antisemitism, scientific racism, Nazi ideology, German Jewish policies in the years preceding the genocide, perpetrator motivation, the experience of the victims, the role of bystanders, resistance and rescue, as well as postwar testimonies, legal definitions of genocide, and Holocaust denial.

課程目標
To acquire basic knowledge in the history of the genocide of the Jews in World War II
課程要求
Students are required to present 2 papers during the semester. The first paper can focus either on “the roots of the Holocaust” (antisemitism and scientific racism), or on “the direct origins of the Holocaust” (Nazi ideology and Nazi Jewish policies in 1933-41). The second paper can focus on one of the three following topics: “The implementation of the Final Solution” (Nazi Jewish policies in 1941-45, perpetrator motivation, the experience of the victims, and the role of bystanders); “resistance and rescue” (victims’ resistance and rescue by individuals, organizations, and states); and “Aftermath” (postwar testimony, justice, and denial). The first paper should not exceed 5 double-spaced pages in length. It must be handed in on Week 8 of the semester. The second paper should not exceed 10 double-spaced pages in length. It must be handed in on Week 18 of the semester. The grade will consist of 20% for the first paper, 40% for the second paper, and 40% for participation in class discussions.
