Course Description |
Aristotle calls metaphysics as the first philosophy, which is also the noblest theoretical science. It is also mentioned in the Nicomachean Ethics that the happiness (eudaimonia) of life is found in contemplating this noblest theoretical knowledge). This special study aims to inquire thoroughly several books of Aristotle’s Metaphysics, focusing on the main topics, such as “being qua being” and “first substance”, thus to grasp the whole outlook of “metaphysics” discussed by Aristotle. |
Course Objective |
1) To grasp the notions of “actuality”, “being”, “substance” and “change” in Metaphysics,
2) To depict the whole outlook of “metaphysics” discussed by Aristotle,
3) To see the possible connection between Metaphysics and the Nicomachean Ethics, esp. Book I &X.
4) To help students to develop the skills involved in understanding and evaluating philosophical texts. |
