Course Description |
The Guodian Chu Bamboo manuscripts (hereafter “Guodian Texts”) is one of essential source materials to conduct research about the development of Chinese philosophy during the Warring States period. However, it is difficult to understand precise meaning of the texts because they have been written in ancient Chu characters, and a large part of literatures have been newly discovered. Under such circumstances, in order to discuss their philosophical contents, scholars and students have to proceed philological reconstruction and philosophical analysis at the same time. Bearing this into consideration, this seminar invites Dr. Pai Yu-Yin to take the lecture part of textual issues of all the Guodian texts, and in doing so, participants are able to smoothly move on the part of philosophical discussion about each text on the basis of their own textual understanding.
Each class is arranged by the following the three steps:
(1) Lecture by Dr. Pai about textual meaning of each texts from the view point of philosophy and phonology.
(2) Students’ presentation about readings written by modern scholars.
(3) Discussion about intention of authors, philosophical implication as well as historical significance in the intellectual discourse of that period. |
Course Objective |
(1) To think systematically about textual content and philosophical significance of the Guodian materials
(2) To have an ability to handle major research works about textual reconstruction and philosophical implication about the Guodian texts
(3) To learn the way of how to utilize the knowledge and skill for studying the Guodian texts to broader range of Chinese philosophy research |
